Welding consumable for material 13CrMo44 (or ASTM A387 Gr. 12 Class 2)

Dear all!

Any recommendation for FCAW Welding Consumable of material 13CrMo44 (or ASTM A387 Gr. 12 Class 2).
Can we use both A5.29 E81T1-B2C and A5.29 E91T1-B3C?


Is this build a new welding procedure?

Yes, build new PQR. According to AWS D1.1

ASTM A387 specification for pressure vessel plate.
You would intend to run PQR for structural steel D1.1, it is an unlisted material in table 3.1.
I never run a PQR for this material, could you source material in both process SMAW A5.5 E8016/18-B2 and A5.29 E81T1-B2.
In the combination of two different classifications in a weld product A5.29 E81T1-B2C and A5.29 E91T1-B3C. I am not experience on it to advise to use.
Hope anybody share your experiences and help him to built the procedure.

More, could you check in the material requisition or project specification for more detail of preheat temperature and PWHT range, and additional test.

I) As first, sorry for my explanation word on welding consumable A5.29 E81T1-B2C and A5.29 E91T1-B3C.

My mean:

  1. 13CrMo44 (or ASTM A387 Gr. 12 Class 2) has 1.0Cr and 0.5%Mo
  2. A5.29 E81T1-B2C has 1.25%Cr and 0.5%Mo --> It suitable for welding.
  3. A5.29 E91T1-B3C has 2.25%Cr and 1.0%Mo --> Can we use it for welding 13CrMo44?

II) If AWS D1.1 it not cover for this material. So we have to use another code ASME IX or ISO15614?

III) For temperature related, I’ll update later when customer sending full specification.

Class E91T1-B3C use for garde 22, or higher.
In matching strength, E81T1-B2C are preferable to use.
I did not run this PQR yet, please follow your project specification.
