Assume that there is a combine wps between GTAW & SMAW. However, I only want to use one process to welding, Ex: apply GTAW not use SMAW. Is this acceptance ? Many thank.
QW-200.4 a) states
(a) More than one WPS having different essential, supplementary essential, or nonessential variables may be used in a single production joint. Each WPS may include one or a combination of processes, filler metals, or other variables.
Where more than one WPS specifying different processes, filler metals, or other essential or supplementary essential variables is used in a joint, QW-451 shall be used to determine the range of base metal thickness and maximum weld metal thickness qualified for each process, filler metal, or set of variables, and those limits shall be observed.
Please look in green higligh above, yous question is a combined WPS of GTAW + SMAW. So, you can weld the product by using a single process (GTAW or SMAW) or combine both processes on the product weld.
- T = base metal thickness
- t = deposited weld metal thickness.
PQR-1 qualified on plate 13 mm with GTAW (deposited weld metal 3 mm thickness) and SMAW (deposited weld metal 10 mm thickness). Assume all essential variables are unchanged.
- Your WPS can apply single process (GTAW) with max. 6 mm deposited weld metal such on pipe NPS 2" Sch80 (5.54mm) thickness by GTAW with/without backing.
- Your WPS can apply single process (SMAW) with max. 20 mm deposited weld metal such on plate 16 mm thickness by SMAW with backing.
Base metal thickness qualified and max. deposited weld metal thickness qualified see more in Table QW-451.1.

Don’t confuse the scope of PQR and WPS, see QW-200.2 (f)
Multiple WPSs With One PQR or Multiple PQRs With One WPS. Several WPSs may be prepared from the data on a single PQR (e.g., a 1G plate PQR may support WPSs for the F, V, H, and O positions on plate or pipe within all other essential variables). A single WPS may cover several sets of essential variable ranges as long as a supporting PQR exists for each essential and, when required, supplementary essential variable [e.g., a single WPS may cover a thickness range from 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) through 11/4 in. (32 mm) if PQRs exist for both the 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) through 3/16 in. (5 mm) and 3/16 in. (5 mm) through 11/4 in. (32 mm) thickness ranges].

PQR can combine of one or more processes on any thickness of plate/pipe.
All essential variables shall be met QW-250 and Table QW-451.1
I recommend to run PQR on thickness min. 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) for further application.

I have a doubtful when we combine 2 or more the single process to qualify a combined WPS of welding joint. The melting area among these types of weld metals is not qualified by mechanical test and NDT. How do we make sure they are completely fused it together?

IMHO is for pqr 1 the base metal qualified is 1.5mm to 5mm
And in PQR 2 the base metal qualified is 5 to 32 mm.
How can you combine these two because the qualified base metal thickness is an essential variable for each process ?
What will be the max base metal qualified in the combined WPS ?
Is it 32 then the max base metal qualified by pqr 1 is altered ?
So IMHO u can use only the overlapping thickness range to prepare the combined WPS if you have pqr of two different process
You should read carefully QW-200.4.
Above quotes are not allowed. Because PQR 1 only covers from 1.5 to 5 mm.
