GMAW (short cicuit + spray transfer)

BACKGROUND: A Groove weld procedure was qualified by welding 10 mm thick plate using GMAW process. Root and Hot pass were welded with Short Circuit Transfer Mode (Deposited weld = 5 mm). Fill and Cap were welded with Spray Transfer Mode . ( CODE : ASME SEC IX, No Impact or PWHT requirements )

Q1. Can this PQR support a WPS ( Short Circuit Transfer Mode only ) having deposited weld metal range 1.5 – 5.5 mm for Groove and Unlimited for Fillet.

Q2. Can this PQR support a WPS ( Spray Transfer Mode only ) having deposited weld metal range 1.5 – 10 mm for Groove and Unlimited for fillet.

In my humble opinion
1.Since your PQR test coupon thickness is less than 13mm(Half inch) Your qualified Base metal thickness is limited to 1.1 times of PQR(QW 403.10).
ie., Your qualified base metal thickness is 10 X 1.1 =11mm (In combination WPS/GMAWS alone)

2.If you use this PQR to support a WPS of GMAWS alone then your qualified base metal thickness would be 11mm & Deposited weld metal thickness would be 5x1.1 =5.5 mm(QW404.32)
ie., t=1.5 to 5.5mm

3.If you use the PQR to support a WPS of GMAW alone then your qualified base metal thickness would be 20 mm & Deposited weld metal thickness would be 5x2= 10mm
ie.,t=1.5 to 10 mm.

QW-409.2 A change from globular, spray or pulsed spray transfer welding to short-circuiting transfer welding or vice versa.

So I can use this combination pqr to support GMAW - Short circuit alone. What about the fillet weld thickness limit in this case. I read an interpretation saying limitations for gmaw-short circuiting is not applicable for fillet.(ix-95-28)

Yes you are right .
Limitation is not applicable to fillet welds .
